Guangzhou

Impressions of travelling through a city that is reaching up from the ground in dense outcrops of concrete and glass, pushing people into the sky; entwined with roads that twist and dive into each other the way the taxi drivers drive through the traffic that makes the hot air thick and visible with particulates; subduing colours and reinventing the skyline as buildings disappear and reappear in the haze. The fish in the pond of the hotel we stayed in seemed like such a tiny inconsequential ecosystem in a place where 14.1 million people live, but they are a flurry of colours and mouths that are breaking out of the water, sucking at the air for chance of sustenance; their presence a signal of tranquillity in a place that roars.

Filmed during my trip to Guangzhou in China in December 2018.
