dextroorg

wien / berlin / tokyo
born in 1968 in austria, dextro has studied graphic design and photography at the graphische lehr- und versuchsanstalt in vienna's 14th district. since then he has been working as freelance graphic designer in vienna, tokyo and berlin. in 1994 he started to show his non-commercial works on his website dextro.org, including graphic experiments and animations made with macromedia director. (dextro.org is one of the first net-art projects worldwide.) in 1997 dextro initiated turux.org, a web-project dedicated to interactive animations. (the later net-artist lia contributed a quarter of the works to it.) due to their lack of commercial application, the works on dextro.org can be seen as visual basic research, and algorithmic exploration. in his code-generated works, dextro operates at the border between controlling processes and allowing them to happen, which instills in the viewer a well-defined amount of uncertainty as to what extent they are intentionally designed, or naturally grown (out of mathematics), which has been likened to the aesthetic principles of wabi-sabi. in 2010 dextro started painting algorithmically generated images with oils on canvas. works from dextro.org have been printed in numerous graphic design books and shown in exhibitions worldwide. most recent works consist mainly of videos, which can be seen on vimeo.com/dextroorg.
