Falling or Floating

Falling or Floating is the first collection in an ongoing series titled Dreams of Everything, which explores the shifting boundaries of perception, identity, and emotional states through digital abstraction.

Each piece in this collection features a suspended figure, hovering midair in an undefined space. Are they falling downward or floating upward? Caught between motion and stillness, reality and dream, the subjects evoke that emotional ambiguity we all recognize: moments when we appear unchanged on the outside, but inside we’re either rising or unraveling.

The visual language is rooted in glitch and retro-future aesthetics, influenced by decades of digital culture and speculative fiction - from the analog signal drift of early screens to the surreal hallucinations of AI. These are not effects; they are signals of shifting identity and perception.

The technique is a new kind of mixed media: motion design software and coding, 3D and game-engine tools, AI-driven image and video generation, and a deeply hands-on remixing process. The result is layered and dynamic, guided equally by control and chaos.

The larger Dreams of Everything series was sparked by a question from Layne’s 7-year-old son: “What if this is all a dream, within a dream, within a dream?” That question - simple, recursive, and unsettling - serves as a thematic root for the works that follow. Falling or Floating holds one facet of that dream logic: each piece a glitch in the matrix, an emotional echo, a moment of quiet disorientation.
