Stop Motion

Stop Motion is a collection of two moving image artworks by Michelle Poonawalla. The collection, made during the lockdown, celebrates and reflects on the qualities of the stop-motion animation technique, with its laborious, contemplative precision.

The precise and slow technique echoes the way Poonawalla spent time in lockdown; the artist used this time to create a series of intricate and meditative works which address some of the ongoing challenges in the world.

Stop motion (or stop frame animation) is an animated film making technique whose basic process involves photographing an object, slightly moving it and taking another photograph. The animation is built slowly, frame by frame; during playback the rapid sequence of images animates the objects, which appear to move.
