Joyousness

Damien Hirst’s artistic practice draws upon a number of different areas including science and medicine, art history, pop culture and philosophy. His ‘Butterfly Paintings’ series is one of his most iconic and recognisable. Joyousness relates directly to these Butterfly Paintings, consisting of rainbow coloured insects meticulously arranged in a mandala-like pattern. Each butterfly is a different breed and size, and their vibrantly coloured wings radiate out from the pale-pink ground.

Hirst’s art often explores themes of life, death and religion and the shape of this work, along with the others in the series, reminds the viewer of stain-glass windows found in churches or fragments of Buddhist and Hindu sacred art. Working with the artist, Sedition brings this powerful work to life in a new digital format.
