Florence To - Scale Travels: Akhromology

Florence To - Scale Travels: Akhromology

From 11 July to 28 September, a solo exhibition of work by Florence To is on display at gnration gallery’s Galeria INL in Braga, Portugal.

Scale Travels: Akhromology is the culmination of To’s participation in the Scale Travels residency with gnration gallery in partnership with the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL). The residency, which took place in February this year, saw To working with researchers from the INL Nanophotonics group to observe interactions between light and matter at nanoscales.

The resulting work seeks to make interactions at the nanoscale visible. Through video, projection and installation, To looks at how light waves are generated, are manipulated, and interact.

The installation also seeks to examine the act of investigation and the connections between artistic and scientific methodologies. In working with nanomaterials, To was not constrained by scientific process and convention and was therefore able to look at the creativity of scientific procedures.

Scientific observation and experimentation has sensorial, emotional and intuitive qualities which, while rarely foregrounded, are important drivers of endeavour and discovery. The laboratory is a performative space operating on a multitude of sonic, visual and kinetic frequencies. Both scientific and artistic research involve intuitive leaps and the navigation of uncharted territories.
