Matthew Biederman at the International Biennial of Digital Art, Montreal

Matthew Biederman presents works at MUTEK and the 3rd International Biennial of Digital Art (BIAN) in Montreal, Canada. BIAN is part of a connected set of events celebrating and exploring innovations in digital art. The biennial takes place in conjunction with the ELEKTRA Festival of new media art and performance, which runs from 1-5 June and includes the IMDA (International Marketplace of Digital Art) conference which takes place on 1 and 2 June. MUTEK, a festival dedicated to the promotion of electronic music and the digital arts also runs concurrently this year from 1 to 5 June.

On 2 June, Sedition launches three new artworks by Matthew Biederman and Pierce Warnecke from the Perspection series. The works, created exclusively for Sedition, will be displayed at a launch event at 5pm following the IMDA conference at Cinémathèque québécoise. The Perspection collection features three audiovisual works that are available as digital editions of 250. By layering and arranging different structures of sound composition and image-making methods, the works create changes designed to increase awareness of perspective.

The International Biennial of Digital Art (BIAN) takes place from 3 June - 3 July at Arsenal Contemporary Art in Montreal’s Griffintown district. Biederman’s work Serial Mutations (Modulus) will be displayed as part of Automata, a large scale exhibition of works by international artists exploring the notion of art made by machines for machines. The work uses algorithms to create abstract forms which shift and play with perspective, in doing so exploring the idea of the screen as surface. The exhibition also features works by Zimoun and Pascal Haudressy.

MUTEK takes place at venues across Montreal from 1 to 5 June. On 3 June, as part of A/Visions, Biederman and Warnecke will perform from their Perspection series as a three-dimensional live audiovisual installation. Perspection (Cubed) projects geometric forms using 3D tracking, exploring the tension between the unitary measure and the continuum using a combination of custom hardware and software, speakers and projectors.
