Mary Osinibi’s contemporary digital design latest offering explores technology’s ability to tell us the truth of the past through digitally recreating ancient masks. The artist asked questions of these masks. What mysteries do they hold? What story do they tell? The aptly named Lazarus project combines innovative digital methods and traditional fine art techniques to arrive at answers to these questions.
The masks, in and of themselves, tell a story but Osinibi explains that technology makes it possible to answer these questions by allowing us to imagine and dream into temporary reality. The ability to bring this illusion into a physical reality on screen is essentially restoring the past, bringing back to life that which was dead thus giving the masks a longer life span or an afterlife.
