Kachina 1 (Horned Kachina)

Raphaele recently completed a series of drawings/paintings after real Kachina Dolls that a collector friend lent her earlier this year. She has been interested in Native art for some time and became fascinated with the Kachina dancers and dolls after visiting a exhibition and seeing some rare video footage of Hopi ceremonies. In this series her goal was to express the mystery and energy coming from those spirits, making them accessible and relevant to our times.
In this particular Ahote Horned Kachina, She poured paint in squeeze bottles so she could use them almost like pens and achieve lines that are free and clean . She also combined pastel and ink. The result is raw, almost savage, and yet not denied of humor.
This is a work on paper, 14x17".
