Donata Wenders, born in 1965 in Berlin, studied Film and Theatre in Berlin and Stuttgart from 1984 to 1989. After working for various film productions as a camera assistant and shooting films as a cinematographer for several years, she decided to concentrate on the photographic image. Donata Wenders has been working as a photographer since 1995. Over the years she expanded her photographic source material and approach to encompass scenes from the world away from the movie set.

In 2006, Prestel published her book Islands of Silence, presenting a wide selection of her work. Wenders has also published several books together with her husband filmmaker and photographer, Wim Wenders, including in PINA–The Film and the Dancers, Schirmer/Mosel, 2012; Don’t Come Knocking, Schwartzkoff Buchwerke, Berlin, 2005; Buena Vista Social Club, Neuse, New York, 1999; The Heart Is A Sleeping Beauty, Neues, New York, 2000; and Beyond the Clouds / My Time with Antonioni, Faber & Faber, London, 1995. Her photographs have been published internationally in The New York Times, Vogue, Deutsch, Marie Claire, The Rolling Stone, Kult, Esquire, Pen, Premiere, Shots Magazine, Casa Brutus, Faves and Egoïste among others. She has also illustrated CD covers for Bono, Jon Hassell, Sam Phillips, BAP, ZweiRaumWohnung and Die Toten Hosen. Since 2007, Wenders regularly runs photography workshops.
