Claudia Hart is an artist working with post photographic simulations technology to create media installations, objects and images. She has been active as artist, curator and critic since 1988, but for the past fifteen years, has used virtual imaging and 3D animation to create hyper-feminine, erotic installations, sculptures and photo integrations. Her project is to feminize the masculinist culture of technology by interjecting emotional subjectivity into what is typically the overly-determined Cartesian world of digital design; addressing issues of representation, technology’s influence on contemporary values and identity, and what might be considered “natural.” She uses advanced production techniques such as Rapid Prototyping, CNC routing and augmented-reality custom apps in her practice, resulting in polemical and emotionally subjective narratives in the otherwise typically aggressive, hardcore iconography adopted by the computer graphics industry.

Previously, Hart produced paintings in the form of illustrated books. Her published catalogues - early versions of the graphic novel form - include A Child’s Machiavelli (1989, Penguin, Abbeville) and Dr. Faustie’s Guide to Real Estate Development (1987, Nautilus). Works from her current and earlier bodies of work have been widely exhibited in galleries and museums and collected by the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum, New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Berlin, amongst others.

Hart is Associate Professor in the department of Film, Video, New Media and Animation at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Honorary Fellow at Eyebeam Centre for Art and Technology. She is a former ID Magazine and Artforum editor and recently collaborated with composer Ed Campion to create Alice’s Walking, Armory Fair, New York, March 2014. Hart was artist in residence at IMC Lab and Gallery, New York, where she exhibited an advanced e-book version of A Child’s Machiavelli, produced by Flicker Lab and the Moss Collective, New York, 2013. Other exhibitions include When This You See Remember Me, bitforms gallery, New York, 2011; Recumulations, including a collaborative performance with Roberto Sifuentes, Black and White Gallery, New York, 2011; Poli-trix Books: Advise for The Aspiring at the Twilight of the American Century, Library Gallery, California State University, Sacramento, 2013; Claudia Hart, Transit Gallery, New York, March 2014, and bitforms Gallery, New York, April and May 2014. She co-curated the group show The New Romantics: Flaneurs of the Internet, Eyebeam Art Center, New York, 2014.

Claudia Hart is represented by Bitforms Gallery, New York, and currently lives and works in Chicago, USA.
